The Pacific Northwest and California are facing severe weather conditions, with high winds and heavy rain causing power outages and dangerous flooding. More than 200,000 homes and businesses in Washington state are without electricity after being hit by winds of up to 70 mph. California is experiencing an “atmospheric river” that is dumping heavy rain, leading to life-threatening floods in some areas. In addition to rain, the Sierra Nevada region is expecting snowfall. Landslides and rockslides have closed highways in some parts of California. Around 14 million people in various states are under winter storm warnings or advisories. New York state and Pennsylvania are also expected to get snow, with some areas potentially receiving up to 12 inches. New York City is not under advisories, but northeastern New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley are. Parts of upstate New York could see 1 to 4 inches of snow in the valleys and up to a foot in higher elevations. Overall, the severe weather conditions in multiple states are causing power outages, dangerous road conditions, and potential flooding, making travel difficult and prompting warnings from meteorological agencies.
