Former Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida has stated that he will not be rejoining Congress after withdrawing his name from consideration as President Donald Trump’s attorney general due to sexual misconduct allegations. Gaetz has been in elected office for 14 years and feels it is time to pursue other goals in life. He plans to continue fighting for President Trump and playing a role in the leadership structure without being an elected official. Gaetz mentioned that he is excited for new representation in his district, as several Floridians have stepped up to run for his seat.
The House Ethics Committee was investigating Gaetz for allegedly paying a minor and an adult woman for sex at a party in 2017. The Department of Justice also looked into sex trafficking allegations against him but decided not to pursue charges. Gaetz denies all allegations, calling them false attempts to smear his reputation. He resigned from Congress after being selected to serve as attorney general by Trump, with whom he plans to continue working closely.
Despite speculation about potentially returning to Congress, Gaetz clarified that he will not be doing so. He emphasized the need for new blood and high-quality representation in his district. Gaetz expressed confidence that the allegations against him would not hold up under scrutiny and maintained his dedication to supporting Trump and the alignment of politics that they have been working towards.
