Police in Las Vegas arrested 57 striking casino workers who were protesting outside Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, according to the Culinary Union. The workers walked off their jobs to demand a new five-year union pay contract, leading to a standoff with authorities. Images and videos shared by the union on social media showed union members blocking a road in front of the hotel and some being handcuffed by police during a non-violent protest. The union’s leadership, including President Diana Valles, were also arrested.
Las Vegas police reported that the road next to the casino, which had been closed due to the protests, had reopened after the arrests. The protest coincides with the city hosting the Formula One Grand Prix over the weekend.
Virgin Hotels Las Vegas is owned by JC Hospitality, Juniper Capital Partners, Virgin Group, and others. The hotel did not provide a comment on the situation when reached out to by Reuters.
The arrest of the striking workers highlights the ongoing labor disputes in the hospitality industry, as workers demand fair wages and better working conditions. The Culinary Union continues to advocate for its members, despite facing resistance from hotel management.
