Press Article: Tornado Recovery Efforts Underway in Oklahoma County
Cleanup efforts are ongoing in Oklahoma County following the devastating tornadoes that struck on November 3, impacting communities such as Harrah, Oklahoma City, and Choctaw. Crews are working diligently, making two passes to collect storm debris in affected neighborhoods, particularly around Southeast 89th and Sooner Road, and Southeast 59th and Triple X Road. These final debris collections are anticipated to conclude by early January.
In the wake of the destruction, local residents are actively seeking ways to restore the beauty of their communities, especially the tree canopy that was devastated by the storm. Conner Mercer, a Choctaw resident and owner of Mercer Tree Service, was inspired to take action after his sister-in-law lost her home on 89th and Sooner. He has initiated a program to replant trees for free in his hometown. Mercer emphasizes the importance of these new trees, noting, "The trees we plant…will be large by the time my daughter is old enough to know what a tree is."
Mercer has partnered with Cori Watson of Firestorm Tree Services to fulfill this vision, aiming for a tree for every resident who lost their trees. The duo, along with the nonprofit organization Share & Care Releaf, is seeking funds for this endeavor, with each tree estimated to cost between $600 and $700.
Ben Martin, founder of Share & Care Releaf, highlighted the personal connection to the cause, stating, "It’s always different when it’s home. We want to help out our community.” The group is now actively seeking tax-deductible donations to support their tree-planting mission. Donations can be made through their fundraising campaigns, as they strive to revitalize the local landscape and support their neighbors in recovery.
