Oklahoma Political Landscape Shifts Focus to 2026 Gubernatorial Race
As the dust settles from the 2024 campaign, Oklahoma is already buzzing with speculation about the 2026 gubernatorial race. With Governor Kevin Stitt term-limited, the upcoming election presents an open seat that several prominent Republicans are considering. Congressman Kevin Hern (R-OK1) has been at the center of rumors regarding his potential candidacy, further fueled by recent media inquiries.
In an interview, Hern stressed that while he appreciates the ongoing discussions, he is currently focused on his role in Congress, especially after being elected as House GOP Policy Chair. "We just had a historic election," he noted, highlighting the importance of maximizing legislative accomplishments during this period of unified Republican control in Washington.
However, Hern is also acutely aware of the political cycle, recognizing that majority control can be fleeting. He admitted to contemplating a run for governor, stating, "You have to make a decision, not about yourself, but how can you best impact the citizens you represent."
Political analysts are already speculating on potential frontrunners for the gubernatorial race, including Attorney General Gentner Drummond, former House Speaker Charles McCall, and State Superintendent Ryan Walters. Hern’s entry could shift the dynamics, particularly in Tulsa where both he and Drummond share a base of support.
While Hern focuses on his legislative duties, he remains open to the idea of a gubernatorial bid. "We’ll look at this to see if our best path forward is staying in the House or is it running for governor in Oklahoma," he concluded, leaving the door ajar for future political pursuits.
