Wyoming Wrestling Team Competes Boldly Against Oklahoma State
STILLWATER, Oklahoma (November 22, 2024) – The University of Wyoming wrestling team showcased impressive resilience on Friday night during their dual against No. 3 Oklahoma State, despite the match concluding with a 32-6 scoreline in favor of the Cowboys. The event marked the debut of new Oklahoma State head coach David Taylor at Gallagher-Iba Arena, with a crowd exceeding 7,000 cheering on the home team.
Although the Wyoming Cowboys faced tough competition, they managed to secure two victories in the 10 matches contested. Notably, No. 18 Gabe Willochell (149) achieved a significant upset by defeating No. 15 Carter Young with a 12-7 decision, demonstrating composure and tactical prowess throughout the bout. Head coach Mark Branch praised Willochell’s performance, calling it "one of his best matches as a Cowboy."
Jared Hill (157) also triumphed for Wyoming, earning a sudden victory over Cutter Sheets after clinching a key takedown in overtime, advancing his season record to 3-0.
Despite the dual loss, Wyoming wrestlers battled fiercely in several match-ups. Oklahoma State’s No. 6 Troy Spratley stunned No. 2 Jore Volk in the opening match, claiming a sudden victory, while No. 7 Tagen Jamison pushed past Cole Brooks in another overtime thriller.
The Cowboys faced tough losses as well, with Eddie Neitenbach (184) and Joey Novak (197) unable to clinch victories despite strong performances against ranked opponents. Wyoming will seek redemption as they travel to No. 22 Oklahoma for their next dual on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
The results reflect the competitive spirit of Wyoming wrestling as they continue to grow and challenge ranked teams throughout the season.
