2 killed and 2 officers injured in Indiana grocery store shooting


Two people were killed and two police officers were injured in a shooting at a supermarket in Indiana on Monday evening. The shooting occurred at Martin’s Supermarket in Elkhart, about 15 miles east of South Bend. Police received a call about the shooting at 5:30 p.m. and found two victims dead inside the store. The suspect was engaged by police outside the store and was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire. Two officers were also shot, with one being treated and released from the hospital and the other remaining hospitalized in stable condition.

The names of the victims, officers, and suspect were not disclosed. The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating and is asking for witnesses to come forward. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time. A pregnant mother who was in the store at the time of the shooting described hearing the gunfire and feeling frozen with fear for her children’s safety.

Elkhart Police Chief Dan Milanese called the shooting a “horrific situation” and expressed gratitude for the support of law enforcement partners. Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson asked for prayers for the victims, officers, and first responders involved in the incident. Indiana Governor Mike Braun and his wife also expressed condolences and stated that they were in communication with law enforcement. The community is urged to keep those affected by the tragic event in their thoughts and prayers.
