Oklahoma School Board to Vote on Controversial Immigration Status Proposal Amid Backlash
The Oklahoma State Board of Education is poised to vote Tuesday on a contentious proposal mandating that parents disclose their immigration or citizenship status when enrolling their children in school. While the board argues that the move aims to better understand student needs, advocates for education and immigration rights warn it could create a climate of fear, deterring immigrant families from accessing essential public education.
The National Immigration Law Center (NILC) has publicly opposed the proposal, stressing that every child has a constitutional right to education, regardless of their immigration status. “Requiring school districts to collect information about immigration status illegally chills access to this opportunity,” they stated, cautioning that it could undermine the fundamental mission of schools.
The proposal comes amidst heightened national discourse on immigration, with President Trump recently signing executive orders strengthening immigration enforcement, including in educational institutions. Furthermore, Oklahoma’s leadership under Superintendent Ryan Walters reflects a broader Republican initiative to reshape public education. Walters has been vocal about the perceived impacts of immigration, recently filing a $474 million lawsuit against federal immigration agencies, calling for compensation for the alleged burdens imposed on Oklahoma’s public schools.
If approved, the rule would require schools to report the number of students without documented immigration status, without identifying individuals. Supporters claim it will help address educational needs, including language support, while opponents fear it may drive families away from enrolling their children.
As the board’s meeting approaches, education leaders like Oklahoma City Public Schools Superintendent Jamie C. Polk stress their commitment to upholding federal protections ensuring access to education for all students, regardless of immigration status, amidst the evolving policy landscape.
