Oklahoma Academic Progress Stagnant According to Nation’s Report Card | Oklahoma Voice News

Oklahoma continues to struggle in reading and math scores, according to the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results. The state’s performance has shown little improvement since 2022, with only 23% of fourth graders and 20% of eighth graders scoring proficiently in reading. Nationally, fourth-grade reading scores declined while Oklahoma remained steady but still below the national average.

In math, 31% of Oklahoma fourth graders and 17% of eighth graders scored proficiently, also falling short of the national averages. The NAEP results from 2024 show that academic performance and chronic absenteeism rates across the United States are still worse than pre-pandemic levels.

The state’s own testing methods paint a different picture, with the Oklahoma State Department of Education reporting much higher proficiency rates in reading and math for the 2023-24 school year. However, documents obtained by Oklahoma Voice show that the state adjusted its proficiency expectations in 2024, resulting in inflated scores and misleading improvements in school performance.

Despite the discrepancy in state-administered tests and NAEP results, the Nation’s Report Card is considered the most reliable tool for assessing K-12 academic achievement on a state-by-state basis. The NAEP assessments have remained consistent over the years, providing a clear snapshot of Oklahoma’s academic performance compared to other states.

The state Education Department has not formally explained the scoring change or the impact it had on the 2024 results, raising questions about the accuracy and transparency of Oklahoma’s educational assessment system.
