Oklahoma Sooners hire Wes Goodwin as new defensive analyst

Oklahoma has made a significant addition to its defensive staff, bringing on Wes Goodwin as a defensive analyst for the program. Goodwin, who previously served as Clemson’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, has a longstanding relationship with Sooners head coach Brent Venables, having worked together at Clemson for several seasons.

Goodwin first joined Clemson as a graduate assistant in 2009 and later became a defensive analyst in 2012 when Venables took over as defensive coordinator. After a stint in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals, Goodwin returned to Clemson as a senior defensive assistant, helping lead the Tigers to success on defense even after Venables’ departure for Oklahoma.

During Goodwin’s tenure as defensive coordinator at Clemson, the Tigers saw improvements on defense, including a top-10 ranking in total defense in 2023. Despite a slight decline in defensive performance in the most recent season, Clemson still managed to secure an ACC championship and a College Football Playoff berth before ultimately falling to Texas.

Goodwin’s hiring at Oklahoma comes following the departure of former defensive coordinator Zac Alley to West Virginia, and he is expected to provide valuable insight and coaching for the Sooners’ linebacker room. With the Sooners aiming to improve on their defensive performance from the previous season, Goodwin’s experience and expertise will be a valuable asset to the program.
