Both deadly Eaton and Palisades fires completely contained in 24 days

The Palisades and Eaton fires, which started 3½ weeks ago in Southern California, were declared fully contained on Friday by Cal Fire. The Palisades Fire began in Pacific Palisades and quickly grew due to dry weather conditions, while the Eaton Fire started in Los Angeles County in the foothills of Angeles National Forest. A total of 29 people were killed in the two fires. The cause is under investigation.

The Palisades Fire destroyed 6,837 structures and damaged 1,017, while the Eaton Fire destroyed 9,418 structures and damaged 1,073. Historic homes in Altadena, a Black community, were among those destroyed. Around 4,000 acres of the Eaton Fire covered urban and residential areas.

The fires were fueled by drought-like conditions and powerful offshore winds. The region has had minimal rainfall since October, prompting extreme fire weather warnings. Gov. Gavin Newsom mobilized state fire personnel and equipment in anticipation of the fires. The recent storm brought some relief by reducing fire potential.

While the wildfires overwhelmed many containment efforts, some, like the Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills, were successfully contained. Cal Fire Chief Joe Tyler credited the recent rainfall for helping firefighters control the deadly L.A. blazes.
