Brent Venables, head coach of Oklahoma, to assume defensive play-calling duties in 2025

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables has announced that he will be taking over defensive play-calling duties for the team in the 2025 season. This follows a reflection on the program’s performance and the addition of new defensive staff members Wes Goodwin and Nate Dreiling. Venables expressed high expectations for the team and is excited about the strategic moves being made on both sides of the ball.

The Sooners are coming off a 6-7 season, their second in three years, which ended with a loss in the Armed Forces Bowl. Defensive coordinator Zac Alley departed for West Virginia after the 2024 season, prompting a reshuffle of the defensive staff. Todd Bates and Jay Valai are now co-defensive coordinators, with Goodwin and Dreiling coaching linebackers.

On the offensive side, QB Jackson Arnold struggled in 2024 before transferring to Auburn, leading to the firing of offensive coordinator Seth Littrell. Oklahoma has brought in Ben Arbuckle from Washington State as the new offensive coordinator, along with former WSU QB John Mateer. Mateer was highly successful in the passing and rushing game in his previous season.

The Sooners face a tough schedule in 2025, including a matchup against Michigan in Week 2 and six SEC opponents from the AP Top 25. Despite the challenges, Venables is optimistic about the team’s potential with the new coaching staff and talent on both offense and defense.
