President Trump Deploys Technology for Mass Deportations
President Donald Trump has deployed federal agents to carry out mass deportations at the start of his term, utilizing a massive amount of technology to track, categorize, and surveil immigrants. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Citizen and Immigration Services have spent $7.8 billion on immigration technologies from 263 different companies since 2020. These technologies include biometric tracking such as facial recognition, voice analyzing, and fingerprint scanning, as well as location tracking, ankle monitoring, and rapid DNA testing tools.
The agencies also have access to investigative tools that can search through emails, text messages, and other files on locked phones. They contract with data analytics firms to store and sort through massive amounts of data compiled on immigrants in the U.S. In a series of raids, four groups of immigrants are being targeted, including those with criminal convictions, deportation orders, expired visas, or who are in the U.S. unlawfully.
While there are ethical concerns about AI and potential racial profiling, experts believe that AI technology can streamline parts of the immigration process and help target immigrants who have committed serious crimes. It is clear that technology will continue to play a significant role in Trump’s immigration policies and other parts of his administration’s agenda. As technology evolves, the choice lies in policy decisions rather than in the availability of technology for enforcing these policies.
