Doctor stresses the significance of lifestyle modifications and early detection in combating cancer.

The incidence of cancer worldwide is on the rise due to factors such as ageing populations, lifestyle changes, and environmental influences. However, Murali Krishna Voonna, MD of Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital, stated that 40% of cancers can be prevented through lifestyle modifications, risk factor avoidance, vaccination, and early detection which can cure 50% of cases. World Cancer Day, observed on February 4, aims to raise awareness and encourage action in the global fight against cancer.

Dr. Voonna emphasized the importance of preventing cancer through lifestyle choices like quitting smoking, avoiding alcohol, maintaining a healthy diet, and getting vaccinations, as well as early detection for better outcomes. He highlighted the need for better implementation of laws like the Control of Tobacco Products Act to reduce tobacco use and the importance of regular screening for early detection.

The government of India spends a significant amount on cancer treatment subsidies, with a portion of this being due to tobacco-related illnesses. Dr. Voonna stressed the need for increased budget allocation for health in India and for private hospitals to receive exemptions on GST for importing medical equipment. He also called for more government schemes to cover cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Voonna noted that a large percentage of cancer deaths occur in low and middle-income countries, emphasizing the importance of prevention, early detection, infrastructure, manpower, and palliative care to reduce inequities in cancer care. The Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital organized a walkathon to raise awareness about cancer ahead of World Cancer Day.
