Getting to Know Oklahoma’s Newest House Speaker: A Conversation with Kyle Hilbert

Oklahoma Speaker of the House, Kyle Hilbert, faced a major decision during his senior year at Oklahoma State University a decade ago. Despite being urged by his professor to pursue graduate school, Hilbert’s father and high school ag teacher convinced him to run for state representative. At 21, Hilbert was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives, defeating another OSU senior. Now at 30, he is the youngest House speaker in the country, leading a caucus of 79 members in a 101-seat chamber.

Hilbert’s journey into politics was driven by a desire to be an effective legislator within the constraints of term limits. He faced challenges early on during the 56th Legislature, marked by revenue failures that led to budget cuts and tax increases. Through circumstances, he rose to become speaker pro tem, and eventually, the House speaker.

As House speaker, Hilbert’s main task is to keep his caucus united and moving forward, a challenging feat given differing opinions within the party. He emphasizes the importance of integrity in politics, believing it matters in a small state like Oklahoma.

Hilbert’s leadership team includes Rep. Anthony Moore as speaker pro tem-elect, Rep. Stan May as caucus chair, and other members in various positions. Despite the challenges ahead, Hilbert is determined to lead his caucus effectively and with integrity.
