Ontario to remove American alcohol from shelves following Trump’s tariff announcement

Ontario will no longer sell American alcohol in response to President Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian imports. Premier Doug Ford announced that the Liquor Control Board of Ontario will remove U.S. products from its shelves and catalog to promote Ontario and Canadian-made products. The LCBO is one of the largest alcohol wholesalers in Ontario, selling over 1.1 billion liters of alcohol in 2023. Canada primarily imports hard liquor from America, making it a significant market for U.S. alcohol products. The LCBO will stop all sales of U.S. alcohol products online and in stores indefinitely, as they are the importer of record for American alcohol in Ontario. This decision follows other Canadian premiers’ actions, such as Nova Scotia and British Columbia, directed towards removing American alcohol from shelves in retaliation to the tariffs.Overall, the move is aimed at supporting local and domestic alcohol producers by reducing dependence on American alcohol products in light of the imposed tariffs.
