FBI Agents’ Names Involved in Capitol Riots Investigation to be Released to Trump Administration Officials

FBI executives initially considered resisting a Justice Department request for the names of personnel involved in Capitol riot cases, but ultimately decided to comply with the order, deemed lawful by lawyers. The decision was made despite letters of protest from the FBI Agents Association and former Director William Webster, condemning the removal of senior officials. The Society of Retired Special Agents urged members to call elected officials to protest potential punishments. Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee demanded answers from Trump Administration officials regarding recent firings and re-assignments within the DOJ and FBI, calling it an alarming threat to national security.

The Democrats expressed concern over widespread fear of a mass purge of FBI agents involved in Capitol riot investigations. The letter also criticized the Trump administration’s actions of replacing career officials with those loyal to the former president. Republicans on the committee largely remained silent on the issue. Minority Democrats lack the power to enforce document requests or block the confirmation of Trump’s choice for FBI director, Kash Patel.

Multiple federal prosecutors who were fired over their involvement in the January 6th cases returned to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia to drop off government-owned devices and collect personal belongings. Acting U.S. Attorney Ed Martin, a “stop the steal” advocate, declined to answer questions after emerging from the building. The fired prosecutors were hired to handle Capitol attack cases and were on probationary status at the time of their dismissals. None were accused of wrongdoing, but their dismissal letters mentioned Trump’s executive order about the attack as the reason for their removal.
