Corruption survey reveals worst scores in over a decade for many nations

The Corruption Perceptions Index, released by Transparency International, found that 47 countries had their lowest scores in more than a decade, indicating high levels of corruption worldwide. The global average score remained unchanged at 43, with Denmark, Finland, and Singapore ranking as the least corrupt countries. The United States dropped in the rankings due to criticism of its judicial branch, while France, Germany, and Canada also experienced declines. In Mexico, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s promises to tackle corruption did not result in any convictions or recovered assets. Slovakia, under Prime Minister Robert Fico’s government, saw a decrease in anti-corruption efforts. Russia’s score declined further due to its invasion of Ukraine, while Ukraine itself showed progress in judicial independence. The Middle East and North Africa were described as bleak in terms of anti-corruption efforts, with political leaders benefiting from wealth and clamping down on dissent. Sub-Saharan Africa had the lowest average score, while Asia and the Pacific governments were criticized for failing to deliver on anti-corruption pledges. The report highlighted the risks of corruption in climate change efforts. Overall, global corruption levels remain high, with efforts to reduce them faltering.
