E-commerce platform shuts down website for selling swastika shirts, citing violation of terms and conditions

Ye’s website, which had been selling shirts featuring a swastika, was taken offline after the ecommerce platform Shopify determined that the site violated its rules. The platform stated that the merchant did not engage in authentic commerce practices and removed them from Shopify. The website redirected to a notice stating that the store was not available.

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, used a Super Bowl commercial to drive traffic to his website, where he was selling white T-shirts with a black swastika, a symbol associated with Nazi Germany and antisemitic hatred. Ye has been posting antisemitic messages on social media, including claims that he is a Nazi, leading to his account being deactivated. Shopify did not specify which rule had been violated but stated that they restrict products or activities they deem inappropriate or offensive.

Ye’s spokesperson, Milo Yiannopoulos, defended Ye as an artist who pushes the boundaries of creativity and free expression. Ye, a successful figure in hip-hop, had previously collaborated with Adidas for his Yeezy brand, but the partnership was terminated in 2022 due to his antisemitic remarks.

Cloudflare, the website hosting provider, and GoDaddy, the domain registry company listed with the website, did not respond to requests for comment. Ye’s spokesperson did not provide a response to Shopify’s decision at the time of publication.
