A Choctaw middle school student, Caleb Brumley, is finding healing and support through a dog program at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital after a dirt bike collision last April. The program, Paws for Purpose, includes five golden retrievers that assist children with pain management, procedural support, and family support. Caleb, who suffered serious injuries in the accident, is working with a canine named Prince to relearn how to walk. Prince has been helping Caleb with his trauma and pain, especially as he struggles with bending his knee and running. The dogs in the program help kids cope with hospitalization and bring positivity to their families. Caleb’s mother, Lindsey, shared that Prince has had a significant impact on her as she navigated her son’s recovery.
The Manager for Pediatric Rehabilitation at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, Kelly Simmons, expressed the positive impact the dogs have on the children and their families. Caleb is set to undergo another operation due to his injuries, but he is looking forward to continuing his recovery journey with Prince by his side. Paws for Purpose is considering expanding its program to reach more children in need of support and healing.
