Oklahoma running backs coach DeMarco Murray is reportedly a candidate for the running backs coach position at Penn State, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. This is the second consecutive year Murray has been considered for a coaching job at a Big Ten powerhouse, after being a candidate for the same position at Ohio State last year.
Murray received a raise and contract extension in January, and then another raise in March after garnering interest from Ohio State. He now has a salary of $800,000 for 2024 and is set to make $2.525 million over the term of his contract. Head coach Brent Venables stated that Murray has been in high demand due to his coaching abilities.
A former NFL player, Murray was named AP Offensive Player of the Year and won the NFL rushing title. He transitioned to coaching in 2019 after a brief stint in broadcasting. Since joining the Sooners in 2020, Murray has coached successful players like Eric Gray and Rhamondre Stevenson, as well as recruiting top talent like Taylor Tatum and Xavier Robinson.
Despite struggling to identify a lead running back in recent seasons and facing challenges with a new offensive line, quarterback, and injured wide receivers in 2024, Murray has proven himself as a successful coach. He recently signed 4-star recruit Tory Blaylock for the 2025 class, but has not secured any running back commits for the 2026 class or beyond yet. Murray’s coaching expertise and ability to recruit top talent make him an attractive candidate for Penn State and other top programs in the country.
