Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio has recently implemented Carbyne Apex, an AI-driven program that allows 911 dispatchers to have real-time visual access to emergency scenes through the caller’s cell phone camera. Elizabeth Maple, a communications supervisor, explained that callers to 911 receive a link that, when clicked on, provides dispatchers with the caller’s location and live video or pictures of the emergency. This information can be shared with first responders through Responder Connect. The system can also be used remotely at events or schools and offers a two-way translation feature in Spanish.
Maple highlighted the effectiveness of the system in a domestic violence incident where the transcription feature helped dispatchers understand the situation when the caller’s voice was muffled. Sheriff Alex Lape emphasized the benefits of the new technology, stating that the previous 911 system was outdated and the new system maximizes efficiency, minimizes response time, and enhances public safety.
The technology not only provides visual access to emergency scenes but also offers transcription capabilities and remote access in case of emergencies. This cutting-edge technology is a significant upgrade from the 1980s technology previously in place.
