US Agency for International Development Inspector General Dismissed after Publishing Findings on Trump’s Reduction Initiative

The inspector general at the U.S. Agency for International Development, Paul Martin, was fired the day after his office released a report detailing the negative impact of the Trump administration’s downsizing of the agency. The report warned of dangers associated with staffing gaps, such as lack of oversight leading to potential funding of terrorist organizations. It also raised concerns about waivers for lifesaving assistance issued by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, putting millions of dollars of food assistance at risk of spoilage or diversion.

Martin was notified of his dismissal by email from the deputy director of the Office of Presidential Personnel. He informed his staff of his removal, expressing gratitude for their work in providing independent oversight of USAID programs and personnel. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Martin’s dismissal.

CNN first reported on Martin’s firing, and NBC News obtained the termination email. Abigail Williams and Allan Smith, producers and reporters for NBC News, covered the story. Zoë Richards also contributed to the reporting. Martin’s dismissal reflects ongoing concerns about the impact of the administration’s actions on critical aid programs, raising questions about accountability and oversight within USAID.
