The Bartlesville Westside Community Center in Oklahoma is organizing a two-day bus tour to raise awareness about the state’s historically all-Black towns. The tour, scheduled for February 21 and 22, will visit 11 out of Oklahoma’s 13 Black towns, with a focus on educating participants about the history, struggles, and legacies of these communities. The goal is to shed light on the challenges these towns face in terms of declining populations and resources.
The second day of the tour will feature a special program where mayors and leaders from the Black towns will come together to discuss ways to address the issues affecting their communities and support their growth and development. While the initiative is part of Black History Month, the organizers hope that the conversations sparked by the tour will continue beyond February.
The Bartlesville Westside Community Center is also working to raise funds through an endowment to support ongoing community efforts and outreach. The ultimate goal of the tour and the center’s initiatives is to encourage local leaders to explore ways to revitalize these historically significant towns and attract new residents and resources for their future growth and prosperity. Those interested in participating in the Black Towns Tour must RSVP in advance as space is limited.
