East Texas is home to beautiful towering trees, but urban trees face a set of challenges that can impact their health. Luke Alfaro, Urban Forester and Arborist for the City of Tyler, will be presenting a lecture on “Urban Tree Stress” as part of the Smith County Master Gardeners Library Series. The lecture will take place on Feb. 21 at the Tyler Public Library and will address common stressors such as soil compaction, drought, improper pruning, pests, and construction damage.
Alfaro will provide practical solutions for managing tree stress, including proper watering techniques, mulching, tree selection, and ways to mitigate construction-related damage. By learning to identify early signs of tree stress, attendees can prevent severe damage or loss before symptoms are visible.
Healthy urban trees not only enhance the aesthetics of neighborhoods but also provide shade, improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff, and increase property values. For those who care about the trees in their environment, this free lecture is a valuable opportunity to learn how to promote tree health.
The Smith County Master Gardeners Library Series aims to educate and inspire East Texas gardeners. All lectures in the series are open to the public, with no registration required. For more information, visit txmg.org/smith or follow the Smith County Master Gardeners on Facebook. By taking steps to address urban tree stress, communities can ensure that their trees thrive and provide numerous benefits for years to come.
