The Oklahoma City Zoo is mourning the unexpected death of Mwami, a 36-year-old chimpanzee, who passed away on Friday, Feb. 7. Mwami underwent a routine health exam and dental surgery that day and seemed to be in good health. However, while recovering from anesthesia in the Great EscApe habitat, he went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived.
Caretakers fondly remembered Mwami as having a larger-than-life personality and enjoying various activities such as enrichment, training, and collecting his favorite foods to carry in his hands and feet. The zoo expressed their sorrow over the loss of Mwami and thanked the caretakers for their efforts to save him.
The zoo has not disclosed the exact cause of Mwami’s death, but they assured that they will be conducting a thorough investigation to determine what happened. Mwami was a beloved member of the zoo’s chimpanzee community and will be greatly missed by both staff and visitors.
The Oklahoma City Zoo continues to provide exceptional care for its animals and is committed to ensuring the well-being of all the animals in its care. They have asked for privacy during this difficult time as they grieve the loss of Mwami.
