A winter downpour in Los Angeles on Thursday caused mudslides on Mulholland Drive and prompted evacuations in areas affected by recent wildfires. The Los Angeles Fire Department closed the roadway after 8 inches of mud slid over it, but determined that homes above the slide were stable. Flash flood warnings were issued for the burn scar of the Palisades Fire, with evacuation orders for the Pacific Palisades area and other nearby locations. An SUV was swept into the ocean by a mud and water flow in Malibu, but the driver escaped with minor injuries. In Orange County, mandatory evacuations were ordered in Trabuco Canyon, Bell Canyon, and Hot Springs Canyon due to mudslide concerns. Other areas were advised to prepare for evacuation if necessary. Ventura County also issued an evacuation warning for those near the Mountain Fire burn scar. About 32 million people were under flood watches as heavy rain continued to soak the state, with expected rainfall of 1 to 3 inches along the coast and up to 6 to 10 inches in higher terrain through Friday. All flood warnings were canceled by 8 p.m. as the rain moved out of the area, but the National Weather Service cautioned that mud and rock slides could still occur even after the rain stopped.
