Police say Mother and 2-year-old daughter die days after Munich ramming attack

A 37-year-old woman and her 2-year-old daughter died from injuries sustained after a car intentionally plowed into a crowd in Munich, Germany. The incident occurred during a trade union demonstration and injured dozens of people, with eight seriously hurt. The suspect, a 24-year-old Afghan national, was arrested on 36 counts of attempted murder, as well as other charges. Authorities believe the attack was motivated by Islamic extremism, although they clarified that it was not connected to a nearby security conference on the war in Ukraine.

The suspect reportedly admitted to purposely driving into the crowd for religious reasons and prayed after his arrest. However, investigations have not revealed any ties to Islamist organizations or accomplices. The suspect, who arrived in Germany in 2016 as an unaccompanied minor and had a legal right to remain in the country, had no prior convictions.

Carlo Angerer and Minyvonne Burke, with contributions from Patrick Smith, covered the incident as multimedia producer, senior breaking news reporter, and contributor, respectively. Gabriele Tilmann, a senior public prosecutor, emphasized that the motive behind the attack appeared to be religious, although further details were not disclosed. Authorities confirmed that a search of the suspect’s apartment did not yield any evidence linked to the attack.
