State & Union: Take the initiative to get screened and implement lifestyle changes to lower your risk of cancer | News

February is National Cancer Prevention Month, a time to focus on reducing the risk of cancer and taking steps towards prevention. Kendra McIntyre, outreach coordinator for the Cancer Services Program of Allegany, Steuben, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua Counties, emphasizes the importance of getting screened for certain cancers and making lifestyle changes such as adopting a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, exercising, reducing alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking.

Research shows that up to half of cancer cases and deaths could be prevented through screenings and lifestyle modifications. Screening tests can detect precancerous cells in cervical and colorectal cancers, allowing for their removal before cancer develops. Mammograms can also detect breast cancer early for more effective treatment.

For those without insurance or a healthcare provider, the Cancer Services Program offers free cervical, colorectal, and breast cancer screenings for eligible New Yorkers aged 40 and older. By calling (877) 778-6857, individuals can determine if they qualify for these services.

In addition to screenings, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, eating well, avoiding tobacco, and limiting alcohol consumption are all crucial in reducing cancer risk. More information on cancer prevention and early detection can be found at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

As we celebrate good health in 2025, let us take this opportunity to educate ourselves on cancer prevention and make proactive choices to safeguard our well-being.
