Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has thanked people who have written to him while he is jailed in a New York City detention facility. This statement, posted on a website set up by his defense team, represents his first public comments since shouting to reporters before a court appearance in Pennsylvania in December. Mangione faces first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism and other charges in Thompson’s December 4 killing. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received in letters from the Metropolitan Detention Center, where he is detained pending trial. Authorities have condemned Thompson’s killing as premeditated and targeted gun violence that will not be tolerated. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro criticized those who considered Mangione a hero for the killing. Mangione was arrested with a “ghost gun” following the shooting in Manhattan that left Thompson dead. He is charged with murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and possession of a forged instrument in both New York and Pennsylvania. Although UnitedHealthcare is the largest private insurer in the country, neither Mangione nor his family were insured by the company. Authorities found writings on Mangione detailing his grievances with the health care system. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains in custody as the legal process continues.
