China criticizes U.S. for ‘significant backtracking’ on Taiwan stance following State Dept. website update

China has accused the United States of a “serious regression” in its position on Taiwan after the State Department updated the Taiwan section of its website to remove a reference to the independence of the island that Beijing claims. The phrase “we do not support Taiwan independence” was removed, which Taiwan welcomed but China criticized as sending the wrong signal to independence forces. The U.S. remains committed to the “one China” policy and opposes any unilateral changes to the status quo from either China or Taiwan, supporting peaceful dialogue between the two sides.

The website changes also added references to Taiwan’s cooperation with a Pentagon technology project and expressed continued support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. Despite recent comments from President Donald Trump raising concerns in Taiwan, the U.S. has made strong statements of support for Taipei. In the midst of increasing military pressure from China, Taiwan detected numerous Chinese military aircraft and vessels operating near the island.

The U.S. does not have official relations with Taiwan but is its most important international backer, providing defensive weapons to the self-ruling democracy. Taiwan, recognized as an independent country by itself, has faced increased military and other pressures from China, which considers Taiwan a part of its territory. The Taiwan Strait remains a delicate and sensitive area of contention between the U.S., China, and Taiwan.
