Half of the passengers on a U.S. deportation flight to Costa Rica will be minors, most of whom are Asian.

A deportation flight leaving the U.S. Thursday will carry 135 mostly Asian migrants to Costa Rica, including children, minors, and pregnant women from countries like China, Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan. Costa Rica agreed to accept the migrants as a humanitarian gesture without any special conditions. The migrants will be housed in a Temporary Migrant Care Center in Corredores, Costa Rica, before eventually being repatriated to their home countries, with the U.S. covering the cost of the flights. The International Organization for Migration will provide humanitarian support and facilitate the return of these migrants when it is safe to do so. Some migrants may be able to request refugee status in Costa Rica, while others who refuse to return to their home countries will be sent to a facility in the Darien province of Panama. Costa Rica’s President referred to the country’s willingness to help as assisting its “economically powerful brother from the north” and emphasized the importance of repaying love with love. The U.S. government did not comment on the situation immediately. Meanwhile, over 300 mostly Asian migrants are being held at a hotel in Panama, waiting for international authorities to arrange their return home while expressing reluctance to return voluntarily. Authorities are working with international organizations like the UNHCR to ensure the safe repatriation and humane treatment of the deported migrants.
