Human remains believed to be those of Israeli hostage Shiri Bibas were returned by Hamas to Israel, according to Bibas’ family. The remains were returned after a mix-up in which the wrong body was initially returned. The identification process at the Institute of Forensic Medicine confirmed the remains as Bibas, who was murdered in captivity. The Israel Defense Forces have not confirmed the identity of the remains. Hamas had previously released the remains of four hostages as part of a ceasefire agreement, but the body initially believed to be Bibas was later found to be someone else. Israeli officials expressed outrage over the incident, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling it a “cynical act” by Hamas.
Bibas, along with her two children, was abducted from their kibbutz in 2023. The children were later found to have been brutally murdered by Hamas. Hamas claimed that Bibas and her children were killed by an Israeli airstrike, a claim denied by the IDF. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed their grief over Bibas’ death, marking the end of 505 days of uncertainty for the family. The IDF is reviewing reports of a new body being released, as the situation continues to unfold.
