A state judge in New Jersey dismissed racketeering charges against influential Democrat George Norcross and his co-defendants. The charges, brought by Attorney General Matt Platkin, alleged that Norcross and others used their political influence to benefit themselves through legislation. However, the judge found that the allegations did not constitute criminal coercion or extortion and were time-barred. One of the key allegations against Norcross involved threatening a developer over waterfront property rights in Camden, New Jersey. The indictment also accused the defendants of extorting businesses with property rights and selling tax incentive credits for profit. Defense lawyers argued that the investigation was motivated by a vendetta, as previous probes into the matter had yielded no results. Norcross, a prominent figure in New Jersey politics and a major financial supporter of Democrats, had been viewed as a powerful behind-the-scenes player. The judge’s decision to dismiss the indictment also applied to Norcross’s brother, his lawyer, the CEO of a community partnership, the CEO of a logistics company, and a development company executive. Attorney General Platkin has stated his intention to appeal the ruling.
