UCHealth in Colorado has implemented a new position called the patient technology technician (PTT) to help nurses troubleshoot technology issues, allowing them to focus on providing patient care instead of dealing with technical difficulties. This role was created in response to nurses feeling overwhelmed by having to handle technology problems on top of their already demanding workload. The PTTs are available 24/7 to support frontline nurses and certified nursing assistants with issues related to wearables, telemetry, safety view cameras, medication scanners, and other devices.
The PTT program has resulted in significant time and cost savings while increasing staff satisfaction. Nurses no longer have to interrupt patient care to address technology issues, and they can spend more quality time with patients. The presence of PTTs has led to a reduction in Code Blue events related to telemetry and has given back hours of valuable time to nursing staff. The program has also saved money by eliminating lost telemetry boxes and reducing the number of physical steps nurses have to take per shift.
The success of the PTT program at UCHealth has sparked interest from other healthcare systems, with several systems now implementing their version of a PTT role. This innovative solution has proven to be a valuable addition to the healthcare team, allowing nurses to focus on what they do best – caring for patients.
