Man found guilty of 1999 murder extradited to Oklahoma to receive death penalty

John Fitzgerald Hanson, convicted of the 1999 murder of Mary Bowles in Tulsa County, is now back in Oklahoma’s custody, potentially facing his death sentence after being transferred from a Louisiana federal prison. Hanson and an accomplice abducted Bowles from a shopping mall and killed her in an isolated dirt pit, also killing a witness. Hanson had been serving a life sentence for bank robbery in Louisiana.

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond expressed relief that Hanson was finally transferred back to Oklahoma after delays by the Biden Administration, and plans to request the Court of Criminal Appeals to schedule Hanson’s execution for later this year. Drummond referred to the long wait for justice for Bowles’ family and friends, and emphasized the importance of Hanson being returned to Oklahoma for justice to be served.

Efforts to transfer Hanson back to Oklahoma had been stalled until a new request was received and approved by U.S. Attorney General Bondi and the Bureau of Prisons. Hanson was then transferred to the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester on March 1. Drummond commended the efforts of President Trump’s administration for recognizing the importance of bringing Hansen back to Oklahoma for his sentencing. The impending execution will provide closure for the family and friends of Mary Bowles after a long and frustrating wait for justice.
