USAID official on leave for stating that obstacles to life-saving programs will result in ‘avoidable deaths’

An official at the federal foreign aid agency, USAID, was placed on leave after raising concerns that layoffs, cuts, and funding obstacles implemented by the Trump administration would lead to preventable deaths and threats to U.S. security. The official, Nick Enrich, sent a memo to staff stating that the agency had not implemented lifesaving humanitarian assistance due to the pause on foreign aid issued by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Enrich criticized the political leadership at USAID, the State Department, and DOGE for creating obstacles that prevented the implementation of crucial programs. He also pointed out contradictory guidance and delays in processing funds for approved activities.

Enrich’s concerns were validated by the Trump administration’s cancellation of $60 billion in funding for USAID, leading to the termination of significant programs and harming vulnerable populations globally. The administration’s plans to cut contracts held by USAID were also causing disruptions in biosecurity, food supplies, and vaccine distribution for diseases like polio, mpox, and Ebola. The agency’s mission of saving lives, reducing poverty, and strengthening democratic governance was at risk due to the budget cuts.

Trump and Elon Musk, tasked with leading the Department of Government Efficiency, believed that USAID wasted taxpayer dollars and promoted a liberal agenda worldwide. Despite promises from Rubio to establish waivers for vital programs, Enrich’s suspension highlighted the immediate impact of the funding cuts on critical humanitarian assistance. The situation at USAID raised concerns about the administration’s priorities and their effects on global health and security.
