North Carolina’s oldest llama brings comfort to children with chronic illnesses

The world’s oldest llama in captivity, named Whitetop, resides at Victory Junction camp in North Carolina, where he comforts chronically ill children. At 27 years old, Whitetop dethroned the previous recordholder, Dalai Llama. Victory Junction was founded by NASCAR royalty, the Petty family, in honor of their son Adam, who passed away in a car crash. The camp provides support for children with various medical conditions, and Whitetop has become known for his empathetic and calming presence. Despite developing arthritis in his old age, Whitetop remains healthy due to excellent care and exercise.

Whitetop enjoys interacting with campers, especially when they pet him. He has a close friendship with a miniature highland cow named Gus-Gus and also likes rolling in wood chippings, eating alfalfa, and posing for selfies. The camp has even started selling T-shirts featuring Whitetop to raise funds.

Stephanie Wilkerson, a camper at Victory Junction, found comfort in petting Whitetop when she was diagnosed with diabetes. Whitetop’s positive impact on the campers’ well-being has made him a beloved figure at Victory Junction. Despite the stereotype of llamas spitting, Whitetop is described as a peaceful and loving animal who only wants to do his job of bringing joy to the children at the camp.
