The first full-time Black Elphaba, Lencia Kebede, joins Broadway’s ‘Wicked’

Lencia Kebede, a first-generation Ethiopian American from Los Angeles, made history by becoming the first Black actor to assume the role of Elphaba full-time in the Broadway production of “Wicked.” Following a successful Broadway debut, Kebede felt a range of emotions, especially after performing the show-stopping number “Defying Gravity.” She expressed how the moment made her feel powerful, representing her vocal and emotional abilities, as well as honoring her African ancestors.

Kebede’s performance received support from her family and friends, including her mother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and college choir director. She emphasized the importance of having loved ones present to share the moment with her. Despite the success of the recent movie adaptation of “Wicked,” the Broadway production continues to thrive, attracting audiences and achieving record-breaking weekly grosses.

Before pursuing a career in theater, Kebede majored in diplomacy & world affairs and politics, with intentions of entering law or public policy. However, she decided to explore her creative side, leading to roles in various productions, including “Hamilton” and backing up Beyoncé during Coachella rehearsals. Kebede’s experience touring and performing in different capacities prepared her for the demanding role of Elphaba on Broadway.

After her magical debut night, Kebede expressed feeling overwhelmed with emotions but grateful for the support she received from her loved ones. She reflected on her journey and the challenges she faced, emphasizing the importance of self-care and emotional wellbeing in the highly intense world of Broadway. Despite the pressure and demands of the role, Kebede continues to find joy and empowerment in her performance as Elphaba.
