Newsmax has agreed to pay Smartmatic $40 million as part of a settlement following a defamation lawsuit filed by the voting technology company. The settlement, reached in September, included a cash payment and an option to purchase stock in Newsmax. Payments totaling $20 million have already been made, with the rest expected before July. Newsmax believes that this settlement will eliminate future legal expenses related to the lawsuit, including costly appellate legal actions.
The lawsuit against Newsmax revolved around false claims that Smartmatic’s machines manipulated the 2020 presidential election in favor of Joe Biden. The settlement details shed light on the confidential agreement that was not publicly available last year. Smartmatic has also settled a defamation lawsuit against One America News, and is now focused on a similar case against Fox News.
Fox News’ parent company, Fox Corp., reached a settlement in 2023 to pay $787.5 million to Dominion Voting Systems to settle defamation claims. Fox has stated that they covered newsworthy events and people surrounding the 2020 election. Smartmatic’s external lawyer, J. Erik Connolly, looks forward to presenting evidence to a jury and holding Fox accountable for their actions.
