The Penn State softball team faced a tough day on Saturday, dropping two games in Big Ten Conference competition. The Nittany Lions lost 10-2 to the Northwestern Wildcats and narrowly fell 8-7 to the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Devon Park, the home of the Women’s College World Series. Despite the losses, the Penn State offense showed potential, combining for 13 hits, two homers, and nine RBIs. Freshman Natalie Lieto stood out, hitting .500 on the day, while senior Maddie Gordon contributed her seventh home run of the season.
In the pitcher’s circle, seniors Mady Volpe and Lydia Spalding both made appearances, with Volpe collecting both losses. Freshman Abigail Britton also saw action, pitching 3.0 innings. Defensively, Penn State had a strong showing, securing its 10th error-free game of the season.
Despite a tough start against Northwestern, Penn State put up a valiant comeback effort against Minnesota. Kaylie Walters and Meagan Ricks were key offensive players in the second game, with Ricks hitting a three-run homer to bring the Nittany Lions within one run. However, Minnesota ultimately secured the 8-7 victory.
With the losses, Penn State now stands at 12-14 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten play. Northwestern improved to 12-9 and Minnesota to 13-14. Penn State will look to bounce back in their next game against Minnesota as they wrap up B1G Softball x Devon Park.
