The Malaysian government has approved a contract with Texas-based Ocean Infinity to renew the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared in 2014 with 239 people on board. The new search will take place at a new 5,800-square-mile site in the southern Indian Ocean and Ocean Infinity will be paid $70 million only if wreckage is discovered. Previous searches have failed to locate the plane, but Ocean Infinity has reportedly improved its technology and narrowed down the search area to the most likely site.
The final approval for the new search comes after three months of consideration by the Malaysian government. Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that the government is committed to continuing the search operation in order to provide closure for the families of the passengers of Flight MH370. The search vessel has already been sent to the site and the search is expected to take place from January to April.
Despite the high costs and previous unsuccessful attempts, the Malaysian government believes that Ocean Infinity’s improved technology and focused search area will increase the likelihood of finding the plane. The contract with Ocean Infinity will be signed soon, and the government hopes that this new search effort will finally provide answers and closure for the families of those who were on board Flight MH370.
