Two service members were killed and one was in “serious” condition after a military vehicle they were in crashed near the U.S.-Mexico border in New Mexico. The crash occurred on Highway 9 near the Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station. Details about the individuals involved were not immediately available. The service members were assigned to Joint Task Force Southern Border, which was created to address immigration and drug traffic at the border. The task force was established after President Donald Trump redirected military resources to the border. The crash is currently under investigation by the joint task force. Initial reports indicated that the injured service members were airlifted to a hospital. Images from the scene show parts of the vehicle off the roadway and down a decline. The Defense Department had previously deployed nearly 3,000 active-duty troops to the border in support of the effort to increase security. The cause of the crash remains unknown at this time.
