OpenAI Discussing Potential $3 Billion Acquisition of AI Coding Startup Windsurf

OpenAI is in talks to acquire Windsurf, an AI tool for coding help, for around $3 billion. This potential deal would be OpenAI’s largest acquisition so far. Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, competes with other AI coding tools like Cursor and is part of the race in generative AI alongside companies like Google and Anthropic. OpenAI recently closed a $40 billion funding round and released new AI models capable of understanding and analyzing user sketches and diagrams. Developers have been using tools like Windsurf, Cursor, and Replit to quickly assemble code for new software, a practice known as “vibe coding.” Microsoft also recently announced a feature with similar capabilities in its Visual Studio Code text editor. Windsurf’s investors include Founders Fund, General Catalyst, Greenoaks, and Kleiner Perkins. OpenAI has made smaller acquisitions in the past, including Rockset and Multi, and aims to stay ahead in the competitive AI market with this potential deal with Windsurf.
