West Virginia defeats Cowboy Baseball

In a highly-anticipated Big 12 opener, Oklahoma State suffered an 8-6 defeat to West Virginia at O’Brate Stadium. This was the only game played in the series, as the first two were canceled due to wildfires. The loss dropped OSU’s record to 9-8, while the 13th-ranked Mountaineers improved to 16-1.

Kollin Ritchie played a standout role for the Cowboys, hitting two home runs and driving in two runs. Ian Daugherty also contributed with a home run and two RBIs. Harrison Bodendorf started on the mound for OSU, pitching 4 1/3 innings and striking out five while giving up four runs.

Despite a strong offensive showing from OSU in the fourth inning, highlighted by Daugherty and Ritchie’s home runs, they couldn’t maintain the lead. West Virginia put together a few critical plays to push ahead in the later innings. An exciting moment came when Drew Culbertson executed a squeeze bunt with the bases loaded to briefly put OSU in the lead.

After a back-and-forth battle, West Virginia ultimately secured the win with an 8-6 score. OSU struggled to generate momentum in the last few innings, resulting in just one baserunner.

Looking ahead, OSU will face North Dakota State in a two-game series beginning on Tuesday at O’Brate Stadium. The team will aim to bounce back from this tough loss and regroup for upcoming games in the Big 12.
