Wildfires raging near Athens prompt evacuations in Greece – Live updates from Europe

A raging wildfire near Athens has forced evacuations of at least 11 towns and villages in Greece. The fire, which began on Sunday, is burning in areas including Marathon and Mount Penteli north of Athens. The situation is described as extremely dangerous, with at least three hospitals being evacuated. More than 670 firefighters, supported by waterbombing planes, helicopters, and trucks, are working to contain the blaze, which is being fueled by strong winds and dry terrain. The Greek prime minister has returned to oversee the response.

In Spain, a businessman is under investigation for stealing water from an aquifer to water his golf course, causing environmental damage estimated at €65m. The Guardia Civil discovered multiple illegal wells and dried-up springs on the property.

Residents have been urged to follow evacuation orders due to the dangerous conditions and thick smoke affecting the air quality in Athens. The fire has burned homes, cars, and trees on the outskirts of the city. The wildfire has taken on a 20-kilometer front, with villages and towns being evacuated as the flames spread. The prime minister’s return to deal with the crisis comes after Greece experienced record-breaking temperatures and environmental experts warn of the heightened fire risk due to the dry conditions. Residents are advised to stay indoors with windows closed to avoid smoke inhalation. Patrols and firefighting efforts have been immediate, but the ongoing battle with the blaze will continue until it is fully under control.
